So, today was a 36 mile slog through constant rain, thanks to the remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon.  The biggest concern was the threat of mudslides.  We had a huge hill to our right and the river to our left.  We were pretty sure we saw several areas where there had been recent mudslides and that was confirmed by our waitress at dinner tonight. So much water coming downhill to the river!
The other freaky thing is the constant weather sirens. We knew there wasn’t anything like thunderstorm warnings or tornadoes with this system, so we weren’t sure what it was.  And we heard them over and over. Sounds like air raid sirens. Brian says it reminds him of the movie Time Machine when the Morlocks are calling the Eloi. The locals say it’s the flood warnings.  The river definitely looks high and we saw trees surrounded by water.
We are trying to get everything dried out.  Even with our Showers Pass rain gear we were soaked to the bone.  Brian discovered the chest pocket in the jacket is actually not waterproof.  We both found pools of water in them. Unfortunately, that’s where he was keeping his phone.  Our phones are water resistant, but it remains to be seen if his will charge again.
We saw a grand total of 9 other cyclists on the trail today.  There’s probably that many here at the B&B tonight, which is a series of 4 historic homes.  Our bikes are stowed in a shed and our gear is drying out in the bathroom.  I really hope it dries out.  We’ve had luck in the past with stuff drying out overnight, so hopefully that continues.
For now we’re warm and dry.  Tomorrow looks like more constant rain.  But the forecast is starting to look better after that.
